Can a cluster have mixed OSes?

While this is not a standard QA test, there is no reason this should not work. Keep in mind that different operating systems do have differences and maintaining a homogenous cluster of similar machines is preferable.

The special case of this is if you are going to upgrade the OS for a cluster on a rolling basis. You can take one node offline, change the OS and reattach it to the cluster.

The same basic rules for upgrading apply, but be extra cautious when you add the first new node with a different operating system version. Keep track of throughput rates, etc to make sure that you are not seeing a drop in performance.
